In this edition of MY FIRST GIG: Austrian DJ/producer Roman Weber, whose career has been flourishing in recent years. This year, this modest sympathetic DJ is on the Tomorrowland line-up for the second time! About his debut: “My brother and I had each prepared our own set.”
“My first performance took place in a small club near the village where I now live. I was nineteen and my brother was seventeen – we were both competing in a DJ contest. Back then, it was about a 30-minute drive from our parents’ house. These days I live nearby, but sadly, the club has been closed for years.”
BPM Studio
“My brother and I had each prepared a set. At home, we shared one pair of headphones and the same collection of CDs. We each had our own playlist and practiced using BPM Studio (a software program). I had never played live on a mixer or CD player before that night.”
DJ Contest
“As I mentioned, we had both prepared our sets down to the last detail – after all, it was a contest. Even though we were a duo, we each had to play a separate set. I was quite nervous and really had to force myself to focus on my performance and stick to what I had planned. We only had thirty minutes to showcase our skills, so it was crucial that the set went well. The audience was mostly young, between sixteen and twenty-five years old.”
We Won!
“In the end, the contest went great: we both won! We received €100 in cash and a few drinks. Unfortunately, it didn’t immediately open doors to the big leagues. It took months before we landed a gig at another club.”
Brother Karl
“My brother Karl and I decided to team up under the name Starburst DJs, so we always had each other’s support. He was a source of inspiration for me, and vice versa. There were no other family members present that night – no friends or a girl I was trying to impress either.”
Headphones… with a Long Cable
“We didn’t make too many mistakes since we had practiced a lot. The biggest challenge was our large Sony headphones… with a long cable. The music in the DJ booth was so loud that we couldn’t properly hear the audio through the headphones – everything sounded distorted.”
Going Solo
“Eventually, we became quite big in our scene. We played in nearly every club and at every rave. After years of traveling and producing tracks, my brother decided to leave the dance industry and I continued solo. Of course, I always had his support in the background. From that point on, things really took off. I started playing international gigs and flying all over the world.”
“I performed at Nature One Festival in Germany, played three times at Melkweg Amsterdam during Techno Tuesday, and headlined at several international clubs. We also started organizing our own events under the name World of Techno, and I had showcases in Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia, Czech Republic, France, and Switzerland. It’s turned into a beautiful story, and I hope many more great memories will follow.”
