Yesterday, we were struck by the sudden and heartbreaking news that our dear friend Gino Lightner passed away unexpectedly. The flamboyant Gino arrived in the Netherlands from the United States in the late 1980s, where he quickly became one of the pioneers of the house scene in Amsterdam and beyond.
With his big personality and boundless optimism, Gino soon became a central figure in the party scene. He was an artist through and through, with a lifelong passion for music that began with hiphop at high school. Quickly, Gino was celebrated for his fantastic taste in records and DJ skills. He never limited himself to just one genre. Instead this vibrant personality was always exploring the entire spectrum of (underground) dance music —a journey that never ceased.
Gino was a beloved guest at parties and even more popular as a DJ at those events. He always had a knack for setting the right tone and was a master behind the decks. Sometimes, he would bring a portable mixer, using it to dance and DJ and the same time among the ecstatic crowd in front of the booth. Having interviewed many DJs over the years, I have heard countless of them mention Gino as a role model and / or mentor. With his deep knowledge of the scene, his enthusiasm, and his extensive network, he was a tremendous motivator for various event organizations.
Gino’s magnificent sets and exuberant, generous personality touched so many of us. Therefore, his sudden passing has hit many hard. Gino, you and your bubbly, amazing presence will be missed intensely by all who’s lives you touched.
Marcy Goes Wild wishes everyone much strength and love in coping with this great loss.
